As a proud U of O duck, I strongly support funding of the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group at U of O.
In the 39 years since OSPIRG’s founding, great progress has been made on consumer and environmental issues but there remain unprecedented challenges. The need for civic engagement, especially among college students, is greater than ever.
OSPIRG was established as a way for students to work within the system (in an era when quite a few were doing things outside the system). OSPIRG promoted public service by students then and it continues that mission today.
It is very important that Oregon’s top state university be active in, and financially supportive of, OSPIRG. It is not much of a stretch to say that OSPIRG began at U of O in the fall of 1970. U of O should be a big supporter of OSPIRG and a funder to the extent of other schools, if not moreso.
